The Holden Young Trio came to life 2006 when Holden moved to Colorado after working in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. He was fueled by a desire to drop-out of the music scene of Nashville (where he worked and recorded from 2003-2006) and ski-bum his way through a Winter in Steamboat Springs. While snowboarding his way thru a record snowfall year, Holden met guitarist/bassist Billy Franklin who had also come from New Orleans.
"We met at the coffeeshop I worked at in Steamboat and hit it off instantly. He (Billy) was born and raised in New Orleans and I had just been there working after Katrina so we had a lot to talk about." Forming the band with Billy led to a Summer of local gigs in 2006 that allowed them to try out different material and back-up musicians.
Steps to the Top was the first album recorded in 2007 under the Holden Young Trio name but was really a joint-effort with Franklin. "We kept the Holden Young name because it was something that could keep going, even if one of the members dropped out. And at the same time that became the essence of 'holding young' with new sounds on each tour." As it came to be, Billy was called back to New Orleans after 2007's touring season to work on reconnecting with the area and with his group at the time called E.O.E.
"These guys play from their heart and remind me of a little trio I started back in the day that became Creedance Clearwater Revival."
- Doug "Cosmo" Clifford (original member of CCR), (in person) (Apr 30, 0009
After 2007's first Summer on the road Holden moved to Boulder. Here the group has continued to develop their unique sound and cultivate an identity of their own on stage. Today, HY3's organic instrumentals and party-funk vocal tunes maintain a stronghold among effects, loops, and other modern electronic techniques. In the studio and on stage, HY3 displays a remarkable ability to present modern material with retrospective styling. Currently joining Holden are Damon Scott on drums (Nederland, CO) and Billy Archilla on keyboards (San Juan, Puerto Rico).
Damon Scott is a versatile and talented drummer previously of the group, the Congress. Joining forces with HY3 has added his elements of drum and bass, jazz, and funk to the mix. With roots in Nederland, Colorado where his father worked at the prestigious Caribou Ranch recording studio, Damon is a perfect addition to the art of the trio.
Billy Archilla has been adding his bass and keyboard sounds to the trio for the past two seasons of touring. Hailing from San Juan, Puerto Rico and developing his talents in his previous project, Monad (Archilla/Salazar Duo) in Sarasota, Florida. During his time in Florida he was also developing production skills and programming his own arrangements of original music. Click here for more on Beasel Productions.
"These three players have grown tight from consistent touring through the West and Northwest....you’re likely to hear the grooves of James Brown, John McLaughlin and extended improvisations of the contemporary jam scene, reminding me of The Disco Biscuits with less synth electronica. "
- Aaron Davis, Jackson Hole Planet (Jun 10, 2009)
Holden’s songs are well-crafted and rootsy. Influences from every genre of music can be found in his writing along with a heavy back-beat of funk and rock. Lyrics come easily to the audience with lyrics such as,
“Don’t think too much”
“I’m gonna break free from myself”,
“Take the time, I keep messing up”
